The Youth of Today
Gemmayze, Beirut
2010
Based in the heart of Gemmayze, Beirut, the project consisted of a youth hostel with a program intended to welcome everyone, from the common traveler to the native.
The concept was based on the duality between the extroverted and the introverted. The surroundings were of vast importance for the street was of “traditional Lebanese Architecture”, one of the few streets left. And so the intention was to treat the surroundings as part of the project itself, the facades became interlocked in both style and materials, all while reintroducing the “modern”.
Despite the building codes and laws, I managed to create an urban courtyard that brings people together, out of their “shelters” and back into “human interactions” in an atmosphere that combines the old with the new, keeping the traditional forever young.
